How To Get Your Family To Support Your Business

It's an unfortunate truth in the stamping business community, that many stamping business owners do not have the support of their spouses and families.

Without that support, it really can make running your stamping business more difficult than it needs to be.

There are, however, a few things that you can do to help improve the level of support you're currently receiving:

1. Set Objectives Together

Sit down around the table and talk about what all of you would like your stamping business to provide for the family.

Decide on an Objective everyone wants.  One you can all agree on.  If you can do that, you'll get your family members vested in your business, because the business is going to provide THEM something, too!

2. Set Expectations

Once you've decided on the Objective, let your family know exactly what you're going to need from them… what you need them to do in order for you to accomplish the tasks necessary to get the Objective.

Be specific.  Tell them what days and hours you'll have to work the business.  Let them know how they can contribute, as well.

Leave no room for interpretation.  The more specific you can be with your instructions, the more likely you family will follow them.

3. Walk The Walk!

Finally, and most importantly, make sure you walk the walk.  In other words, do exactly what you said you were going to do.

Stick to your hours.  Make sure your family sees you starting your business hours on time.  Don't waste time during your business hours on tasks that are not moving you and your business closer to the Objective.  It sends the wrong message to your family.  And, of course, don't work beyond your office hours.  Working "late" usually means you're ignoring your family, which will make them feel like they're in competition with your business.

If your actions do not match your words, then you're going to lose whatever support you've gained very quickly.

Taking these relatively simple steps will dramatically increase the amount of support you receive.  This will make your business easier to run, and, in all likelihood, more successful as well.

Warmest regards,

John
